Our website glossary includes many commonly used website and hosting account definitions. This list is by no means comprehensive but should give you a good starting place and resolve many terminology questions you may have.

B

Backlink

A backlink is an incoming hyperlink from one web page to another website.

Backup

A backup is the archiving of website or computer data so that it may be used to restore the original after a data loss event. (noun) TIP: You should keep a recent backup of your website on file at all times. It's a good idea to run backups at least once a week and after any big changes on your website!

Bandwidth

Bandwidth is a term used to describe the amount of information that can be transmitted over a connection. In regards to websites, your bandwidth refers to the number of website visitors your site can handle over a period of time. When you host with Bizzy Mama, your bandwidth resets on the first of every month.

C

CMS

CMS is an acronym that stands for content management system. A content management system refers to software that helps you to manage the content of your website. The Bizzy Boutique store builder is a CMS.

cPanel

Your cPanel (control panel) is a graphical interface that allows you to better manage your site. Your cPanel is where you will create your new @domain.com email accounts, check your website stats, run regular backups, and check on your diskspace and bandwidth usage. D

Database

A database is an organized collection of data. Your database holds a collection of your website tables, information, and reports that help to power your site. The categories and products you add to your store builder are stored in your database. TIP: You should backup your database on a regular basis!

Diskspace

Your diskspace is the amount of space you are allotted in which to grow your website. Unlike bandwidth that resets on the first of every month, diskspace is cumulative and will continue to grow with your site. TIP: Resizing your images before loading, deleting old or unnecessary emails, deleting old backups, and performing regular maintenance on your website will help to maintain a lower diskspace usage.

Domain Name

A domain name is your unique web address online. Your domain name helps visitors find your site on the World Wide Web (www).

Domain Privacy

Domain privacy is an optional service that will mask your personal information that is tied to your domain name. Domain privacy is available for most domain TDL's, but not all! NOTE: All domains registered are required to include contact information for the purchaser of the domain. Privacy will replace your name, address, and phone number with proxy information and keep your personal details private.

Domain Registrar

A domain registrar is an organization or entity that facilitates and manages the reservation of Internet domain names.

E

eCommerce

eCommerce is an abbreviation for electronic commerce and refers to the trading or facilitation of trade of products and/or services using computer networks, such as the Internet. TIP: See our available eCommerce hosting plans!

eMail Client

An email client refers to a computer program used to connect, access, and manage your email.

Favicon

Your favicon is an icon associated with your website that is displayed in a browser's address bar and next to the site name in a bookmark list. TIP: Our favicon is a green shopping cart with a heart inside.

FTP

FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol and refers to a standard network protocol that is used to transfer computer files from one host or computer to another over the Internet. TIP: FTP is used mostly by your designer and other advanced users. Chances are you won't need it!

Gigabyte (GB)

A gigabyte is a descriptive term for a unit of storage. Gigabyte is abbreviated as GB. A GB is equal to 1024 megabytes MB.

HTML

HTML is an acronym for HyperText Markup Language and is the standard language used to create web pages. TIP: No HTML knowledge is necessary in order to build your site using our Bizzy Boutique store builder!

Hyperlink

A hyperlink refers to a link from a website page or document to another location or file, typically activated by clicking on a highlighted word or image on the screen. See also how to create a hyperlink. TIP: < The link to our knowledgebase article is a hyperlink!

ISP

ISP is an abbreviation for Internet Service Provider.

IP Address

An IP address is a unique string of numbers separated by periods that identifies each computer or server using the Internet to communicate. TIP: An IP address looks like: 123.456.789

Mal's

Your Bizzy Boutique store builder connects to Mal's to provide a secure area for your customers to checkout, and for you to store their information. Megabyte (MB)

A megabyte is a descriptive term for a unit of storage. Megabyte is abbreviated as MB. A MB is equal to one million bytes.

Meta Tags

Meta tags provide structured data about a web page. Meta tags are generally used by search engines in order to assist with listing and indexing your website and website pages. See also SEO.

PHP is a scripting language used for web development and also as a general-purpose programming language.

Responsive

Responsive refers to the mobile compatibility of your website. TIP: All Bizzy Mama hosted websites using the latest version of our software are responsive.

SEO

SEO is an acronym for search engine optimization. TIP: Learn more about search engine optimization in our knowledgebase!

Server

The term server refers to an large computer system or appliance, or specifically to the software that accepts and supervises connection requests sent over the Internet.

SSL

SSL is an abbreviation for Secure Sockets Layer and refers to a computing protocol that ensures the security of data sent over the Internet by using encryption.

Store Admin

Your store admin area is where you will be doing most of your store building work. The store admin area is where you will add in your website pages, categories, and products. It is also where you will set your product prices and upload all images. TIP: Learn more about your store admin area.

T

TDL

TDL is an abbreviation for top level domain and refers to the suffix attached to Internet domain names. There are a limited number of predefined suffixes for your domain name. Common TDL's include: .com, .net, and .org.

Template

Your template is the framework for the design of your website and web pages. The template is what gives the customer-side of your store its unique look on the Internet. Temporary URL

A temporary URL is the direct, unique IP web address assigned to all new websites. The temporary URL will allow you to access your site online before the domain nameservers have been updated to point to the new server. URL

URL is an abbreviation for uniform resource locator and is the address of a World Wide Web page. See also domain name.

Webmail

Webmail refers to email services that are not downloaded to an email cient or used offline and can be accessed directly through the Internet. TIP: Your webmail can be accessed by visiting yourdomain.com/webmail

Website

The term website refers to the collection of pages connected to your domain name that make up your presence on the Internet. Your Bizzy Mama website is managed by using our Bizzy Boutique CMS.
